AI detection, plagiarism checks or Writing Replay: which tool answers your question?

Compare three writing-review tasks: assessing possible AI use, checking source overlap and examining the writing process, with GPTZero examples.

At a glance

Choose the evidence you need before choosing a writing checker. Possible AI use, source overlap and writing history require different checks.

Three concerns that often get mixed together

A piece of writing can be original but inaccurate, copied but correctly quoted, or AI-assisted under a policy that allows it. Before paying for a checker, define the question. Are you investigating possible AI use, overlap with existing material or the process that produced the document?

This buying guide uses GPTZero’s official feature pages, FAQ and pricing checked November 4, 2026. Pickora has not tested these tools. Our cover illustrates three review tasks; the body images are official demonstration visuals.

AI detection asks about patterns in the final text

GPTZero’s AI detection description concerns the model’s assessment of whether prose may involve AI generation. It does not provide a record of every action the author took. Incorrect classifications remain possible, and the vendor cautions against using a result to punish students.

This route can help formulate a follow-up question when a policy makes AI assistance relevant. It is less useful if the actual problem is a missing citation or a factual error. For those, inspect the sources directly rather than using a detection probability as a substitute.

Plagiarism checking asks about overlap

The vendor plagiarism sample displays text matched to an online source. A match provides something a reviewer can open and compare. The example’s percentage belongs to that demonstration; it is not a benchmark or a result from a Pickora document.

A match still needs interpretation. A quotation with attribution, a standard phrase and an unattributed copied paragraph are different editorial cases. Check the original source, the extent of overlap and the citation. An absence of a match does not demonstrate that a document is accurate or that every possible source was searched.

Writing Replay asks about recorded activity

Writing Replay presents writing activity in supported environments, including edits and pastes. That can contribute process context when the relevant activity was captured. Confirm setup and coverage before requiring a report after the work is already finished.

A paste may come from an earlier draft, a quotation or a different editor. A long typing session does not independently establish the accuracy of its claims. Interpret the history together with the document, its sources and the author’s explanation.

A practical selection table

Your question Useful starting point What still needs a person
Could this prose involve AI assistance? AI detection, with its limitations Policy, context and author discussion
Does this wording overlap another source? Source-match report Attribution and the meaning of the overlap
How did this draft develop? Available writing history Interpreting edits, pastes and missing context
Are its factual claims supported? Read the cited primary sources Verification and editorial judgment

For a small editorial team, a written checklist may be more valuable than immediately buying every feature. Decide who opens source matches, who speaks to the writer and who approves changes. A report that nobody knows how to interpret adds little to that workflow.

Check access, capacity and privacy before purchase

The pricing page separates monthly word allowances, per-scan limits and feature access. Confirm which exact plan includes the report you need. Do not assume that a paid AI scan allowance also grants every institutional or integration capability.

Use approved sample material first and inspect the data-handling policy for the actual interface. The FAQ distinguishes dashboard and API processing, so the route matters. Define a useful outcome for the evaluation: a clearer source decision, a better documented discussion or an understandable writing-history report.

Choose the smallest combination that answers your recurring questions. None of these tools removes the need to read the writing, verify its sources and apply a clear policy consistently.
