At a glance
An AI detection result is a model assessment, not a count of proven AI-written words. Interpret the exact output before deciding what to investigate.
A number needs its own definition
Before interpreting an AI detection score, read the label next to it. A probability of a document classification, a sentence highlight and a source-match percentage measure different things. Putting a percent sign after all three does not make them interchangeable.
This explainer draws on GPTZero’s official FAQ and product samples checked November 4, 2026. It is an interpretation guide, not a validation study. Pickora has not measured the detector’s error rate. The cover is an editorial illustration; the highlighted text below is a vendor sample.
Classification is not a word count
The FAQ’s API explanation describes human-only, mixed and AI-only classifications, alongside probabilities and confidence information. Those fields refer to the model’s assessment. A probability for a class should not be relabeled as the proportion of words demonstrably written by AI.
For example, a hypothetical report assigning a high probability to a class would still be a prediction about the document. It would not identify a verified list of copied words. This is an explanation of the distinction, not an actual GPTZero result produced by Pickora. Read the exact documentation for the interface and version you use.
A highlight is a place to investigate

The Advanced Scan sample shows passages highlighted in different colors. Their purpose is to help locate the text associated with the output. Color does not establish that a sentence came from a particular chatbot, and it does not explain whether a writer was allowed to use assistance.
Read the full passage and its role. Is it a quotation? A required definition? A repeated prompt? A short factual explanation? Check the sources and the assignment or editorial brief. The same visible text can require very different follow-up depending on that context.
Confidence does not remove the possibility of error
GPTZero’s FAQ acknowledges incorrect classifications in both directions. It also says its training data is predominantly adult English prose and that more text improves its model’s classification accuracy. A short extract or a different writing context deserves particular care; the company’s own general claims do not validate every individual use.
Avoid turning repeated scans into an experiment that proves authorship. Several outputs from the same system are not independent witness statements. If the text changes between scans, the reviewer also needs to understand what changed and why.
Gather evidence that answers the real question
If the concern is accuracy, follow the citations and check whether the claims are supported. If the concern is originality, inspect source matches and attribution. If the concern is how the document was written, invite drafts, notes and an explanation from the author. These are distinct questions, so one score cannot settle them all.
Writing history may add context where it exists, but an absent history is not proof that no legitimate process occurred. A person may have worked offline or in another editor. Ask a neutral, specific question about a passage and give the writer a reasonable way to explain it.
Keep the conclusion narrower than the evidence
Record the tool and date, the exact output, the material reviewed and the independent context gathered. A defensible note might say that a passage was flagged and its sources were checked. It should not silently become a statement that an author cheated or fabricated the work.
The FAQ recommends using detection to begin further inquiry and warns against punishing students from the result. For an editorial workflow, the same practical restraint helps: verify the work, clarify permitted assistance and make the final decision through a human process. A detector output can inform that process without replacing it.
