At a glance
Choose a sender around the customer relationship and operating constraints, then verify it for the exact use case. A familiar-looking number alone does not establish suitability.
Pick the identity the customer should recognize
A local ten-digit number and a toll-free number can both appear in a business messaging workflow. Start with the identity a customer already knows. If a service team has a published number, changing it is a customer-communication decision as well as a technical migration.
This article uses Signal House’s official US product and pricing pages checked November 4, 2026. Pickora has not registered a sender or tested message delivery. The cover is an editorial illustration of buying choices, not a screenshot of a completed registration.
What 10DLC means in this context
Signal House’s 10DLC explanation describes application-to-person messaging through local ten-digit numbers in North America. The local number can be relevant to a geographically identified business or an existing support conversation.
That does not guarantee customer trust, a higher reply rate or successful delivery. Those depend on the relationship, content and operational setup. Ask whether the number you want is available, whether your use is eligible and what must be approved before production sending.
If you already use the number for calls, verify that migration preserves the required calling and messaging behavior. Do not initiate a transfer simply because a new portal can search for similar-looking numbers. Establish ownership, timing, dependencies and a fallback with the providers involved.
What a toll-free sender changes
The Signal House overview describes toll-free messaging around a recognizable nationwide 8XX number. That may fit a business with one national contact identity. It remains a separately verified sender path, rather than a shortcut around registration.
The pricing page says toll-free approvals follow a separate carrier-verification timeline and take longer than its 10DLC path. Treat launch timing as something to confirm for your specific submission, rather than a guaranteed date inferred from the local-number offer.
For customer support, ask how incoming messages will reach the right person and how the business will manage replies outside working hours. These questions remain relevant whichever number format you choose.
Compare costs using the actual traffic
| Question | Local 10DLC | Toll-free |
|---|---|---|
| Visible identity | Local ten-digit number | Nationwide 8XX number |
| Verification | Confirm the business and campaign path | Confirm the toll-free verification path |
| Base SMS usage | Use the local sender rate | Use the toll-free sender rate |
| Other costs | Carrier charges, numbers and applicable registration | Carrier charges, numbers and applicable verification costs |
Signal House publishes separate local and toll-free rates, with carrier charges listed in addition. Do not compare only the base SMS figure. Include replies, the number inventory and the applicable setup or recurring charges in a written quote.
When to ask about a short code
The same vendor offers dedicated five- or six-digit short codes. Its rate card lists a separate setup and lease structure, so this is a different commitment from renting one ordinary number. A high-volume requirement is a reason to discuss the option with the provider, not proof that it is necessary or cheaper.
Avoid assuming any sender type makes filtering impossible or provides permission to contact people. Explain how recipients opted in, how they can stop messages and how suppression will reach the application. Confirm the provider’s current requirements for the exact campaign. This article does not establish legal compliance for a particular outreach program.
A migration decision you can review
Before choosing, obtain answers to five questions: can you use the intended number; what approval is required; which calling and reply functions must continue; what is the complete cost; and how will you detect a problem during cutover?
Keep the existing workflow available until the approved replacement has been verified on a small, permissioned sample. Record the actual recipient and application outcomes. These are suggested checks, not work Pickora has already carried out. The suitable sender is the one that preserves a clear customer identity and supports an understood operating process.
